I’ve been a Labor & Delivery nurse for over 10 years—and I can’t tell you how many hospital bags I’ve seen packed to the brim… with things that never get touched.
And I get it. You’re trying to be prepared.
But the truth is, overpacking usually just adds stress when you’re already in one of the most overwhelming (and exciting) moments of your life.
So if you’re wondering what you can skip—and what actually matters—here’s exactly what I’d leave at home (and what I’d bring instead).
⸻
❌ WHAT NOT TO PACK IN YOUR HOSPITAL BAG
1. Too Many Clothes
Most moms bring multiple outfits “just in case”… and end up wearing the same comfortable gown or robe the entire time.
Between delivery, recovery, and hospital checks, you’ll want:
👉 comfort > options
✅ What to bring instead:
* 1–2 loose, comfortable outfits
* A soft robe or gown → (Check some out here)
⸻
2. Full Makeup + Hair Kits
I’ve seen full makeup bags, curling irons, straighteners… and most of it stays untouched.
After delivery, your focus shifts fast—and getting rest becomes way more important than getting ready.
✅ What to bring instead:
* Lip balm (you’ll use this constantly) → (Check out my favorite here)
* Hair ties or a claw clip → (My Favorite here)
* Dry shampoo (optional but helpful) → (Here's what I use)
⸻
3. Too Many Baby Outfits
Newborns don’t need outfit changes every few hours.
Hospitals provide basic onesies, and baby will likely be swaddled most of the time anyway.
✅ What to bring instead:
* 1–2 simple outfits for photos or going home
* A soft swaddle → (Amazon link)
⸻
4. Diapers & Wipes
This surprises a lot of moms—but you usually don’t need to bring these.
Hospitals provide:
* Diapers
* Wipes
* Basic care items
✅ What to do instead:
Use what the hospital gives you—and take the extras home.
⸻
5. Bulky Pillows & “Just in Case” Items
I’ve seen moms bring entire comfort setups… only for them to stay in the bag.
Hospital rooms are limited on space, and simpler is easier.
✅ What to bring instead:
* A small, personal pillow if you want comfort
* Phone charger with a long cord → Here's my favorite
⸻
💛 WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS MOST
When it comes down to it, you don’t need a perfectly packed bag.
You need:
* Comfort
* A few essentials
* And less stress
I’ve seen firsthand that the moms who feel the most prepared are the ones who kept things simple.
