Because this decision matters more than most moms realize
Choosing your OB-GYN during pregnancy is one of the most important decisions you’ll make—and most moms don’t realize just how much it can impact their birth experience.
As a Labor & Delivery nurse, I work with OB-GYNs from multiple practices every single week. I see how different providers manage labor, how they communicate, and how their decisions affect outcomes.
Here’s the truth:
Not all OBs practice the same.
And the right fit for you matters more than you think.
If you want a smoother labor, better communication, and a birth experience that actually aligns with your preferences—you need to ask the right questions early.
Why Your OB Choice Matters More Than You Think
Your OB isn’t just someone who “delivers the baby.”
They influence:
Whether your labor feels rushed or supported
How quickly interventions are introduced
Your chances of induction or C-section
How heard and respected you feel in the moment
Some providers are more intervention-heavy.
Others take a more patient-led, low-intervention approach.
Neither is automatically “right” or “wrong”—but one may be a better fit for your goals.
What I See Behind the Scenes (As an L&D Nurse)
This is the part you won’t find on Google reviews.
There are providers who:
Induce frequently (and sometimes early)
Prefer tighter timelines for labor
Have higher C-section rates
And others who:
Are more patient with labor progression
Encourage movement and natural labor support
Are slower to intervene
You won’t see this listed on a website—but you can uncover it by asking the right questions.
5 Questions You Should Ask Your OB Before Delivery
These questions will tell you more than any online review ever could.
1. “What is your elective induction rate?”
This is a big one.
Elective inductions (without a medical reason) can sometimes:
Lead to longer labors
Increase the chance of additional interventions
Raise the likelihood of a C-section in some cases
Why this matters:
A higher rate can mean your provider prefers more controlled, scheduled deliveries.
👉 If you’re hoping for spontaneous labor, this is important to understand early.
2. “What is your C-section rate?”
Every provider has a different rate—and it matters.
C-sections are sometimes necessary and life-saving.
But higher rates can sometimes reflect:
Lower tolerance for longer labors
A more intervention-heavy approach
What you’re looking for:
Transparency and explanation—not just a number.
3. “How do you handle labor that’s progressing slowly?”
Labor doesn’t follow a perfect timeline.
Some providers are comfortable:
Waiting
Letting your body progress naturally
Others may:
Recommend Pitocin sooner
Suggest interventions earlier
Why this matters:
This tells you a lot about their patience and philosophy.
4. “Will you be the one delivering my baby?”
A lot of first-time moms don’t realize this.
In many practices:
You rotate through multiple providers
Whoever is on call delivers your baby
Why this matters:
You may not have your primary OB at delivery—so you need to feel comfortable with the entire group.
5. “How do you support patient birth preferences?”
Whether you want:
Minimal interventions
Delayed cord clamping
Movement during labor
Specific pain management
You need to know how your OB responds.
Listen for this:
Do they respect preferences—or dismiss them?
👉 You want collaboration, not control.
Red Flags to Watch For 🚩
Dismissing your questions
Giving vague or rushed answers
Not explaining reasoning
Making you feel pressured or unheard
Trust your gut—if something feels off now, it likely won’t feel better during labor.
Green Flags That You Found a Good Fit ✅
Takes time to answer questions
Explains risks and options clearly
Respects your preferences
Has a balanced approach to interventions
How to Advocate for Yourself (Even With a Good OB)
Even with a great provider—your voice matters.
Ask questions at every appointment
Make sure you understand your options
Be clear about your preferences
You deserve to feel informed, supported, and confident—not rushed or confused.
