Choosing the right OB can completely change your birth experience.
I’ve seen the difference firsthand—between providers who truly support their patients… and ones who don’t.
Not because one is “better” than the other, but because their approach to labor, communication, and decision-making is completely different.
And as a Labor & Delivery nurse of 11 years, I can tell you this:
Your OB isn’t just someone you see during pregnancy.
They’re the person helping guide decisions during some of the most important moments of your labor.
⸻
If you’re already thinking about your birth plan, this matters more than you think.
I created a simple, realistic birth plan template that actually works in real hospital settings 👇
⸻
WHY YOUR OB MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK
Most moms focus on:
convenience
location
insurance
And while those things matter…
What really matters is how your OB:
👉 communicates
👉 makes decisions
👉 responds when things don’t go exactly as planned
Because labor doesn’t always follow a perfect script.
And in those moments—that’s when your provider matters most.
⸻
WHAT I’VE SEEN
I’ve seen moms feel completely supported, informed, and involved in their care.
And I’ve also seen moms feel rushed, unheard, or unsure about what was happening.
Same hospital.
Same situations.
Different providers.
That’s why this decision matters more than people realize.
⸻
WHAT I WOULD LOOK FOR (AS AN L&D NURSE)
If I were choosing an OB, these are the things I would pay close attention to:
⸻
1. How they respond to your questions
Do they take time to explain things clearly?
Or do you feel rushed or dismissed?
Because that same dynamic shows up in labor.
⸻
2. Their approach to interventions
Every provider has a different comfort level with:
inductions
C-sections
waiting vs intervening
You don’t need someone who avoids interventions completely…
But you do want someone who:
👉 explains their reasoning
👉 includes you in the decision
⸻
3. Whether you feel heard
This one matters more than anything.
If you feel brushed off during appointments, that feeling doesn’t magically disappear in labor.
⸻
4. How they talk about “what if” situations
Ask questions like:
“What happens if labor isn’t progressing?”
“How do you approach C-section decisions?”
Their answers will tell you a lot.
⸻
This is exactly why having a clear, realistic birth plan matters.
It helps you communicate your preferences early—before you’re in labor and things start moving fast.
⸻
THE REALITY MOST PEOPLE DON’T TALK ABOUT
You can have the perfect birth plan…
But if your provider doesn’t communicate clearly or involve you in decisions, it’s hard to feel in control.
And on the flip side:
Even when things don’t go exactly as planned—
having a supportive provider can completely change how you feel about your experience.
⸻
HOW TO KNOW YOU’VE FOUND THE RIGHT FIT
You should feel:
✔ comfortable asking questions
✔ informed about your options
✔ included in decisions
Not rushed.
Not dismissed.
Not unsure.
⸻
And if you really want to feel prepared going into labor—not just choosing your OB—
I also created a full labor prep bundle that walks you through:
what to expect with induction
what to ask if a C-section is mentioned
and how to advocate for yourself
⸻
FINAL THOUGHT
The right OB won’t guarantee a perfect birth.
But it can make a huge difference in how supported, informed, and confident you feel during it.
And the best thing you can do now?
Prepare before you’re in the moment.
