From an L&D nurse who sees these conversations happen every day

Being told you may need an induction or C-section can feel overwhelming—especially when it happens quickly or in the middle of labor.

For a lot of moms, it feels like there’s no time to think… just a decision that needs to be made.

As a Labor & Delivery nurse, I’ve been in these rooms countless times. I’ve seen how these conversations unfold—and I’ve also seen how often moms don’t realize they have options, or questions they’re allowed to ask.

Here’s what I want you to know:

You are allowed to pause.

You are allowed to ask questions.

And you deserve to understand what’s happening before saying yes.

Let’s Be Clear First—These Interventions Can Be Necessary

Inductions and C-sections can absolutely be the safest, most appropriate choice in certain situations.

They can be life-saving for both mom and baby.

This isn’t about avoiding them at all costs.

It’s about making sure you feel informed, supported, and part of the decision—not rushed into something you don’t fully understand.

What I See Behind the Scenes (That Most Moms Don’t Realize)

Not every provider approaches these situations the same way.

Some are more:

Quick to intervene

Focused on timelines

Comfortable moving things along

Others are more:

Patient with labor progression

Open to waiting when it’s safe

Supportive of lower-intervention approaches

Neither is automatically right or wrong—but it does affect your experience.

And in the moment, if you don’t ask questions, you may not realize there’s room for discussion.

The Questions I Wish Every Mom Knew to Ask

You don’t need to memorize a script.

But having a few key questions in your back pocket can completely change how you feel in that moment.

1. “Is this medically necessary right now?”

This helps you understand:

  • Is this urgent?

  • Or is this a recommendation based on preference or timing?

👉 Sometimes the answer is yes—and that clarity matters.

👉 Sometimes there’s a little more flexibility than you think.

2. “What happens if we wait a little longer?”

This is one of the most powerful questions you can ask.

It helps you understand:

  • Whether your body and baby are stable

  • If there’s time to let things progress naturally

Even a small amount of time can change the situation.

3. “What are the risks and benefits in my specific case?”

Every pregnancy and labor is different.

You deserve to know:

  • Why this is being recommended for you

  • What the alternatives are

  • What the trade-offs look like

4. “Are there any other options we can try first?”

Depending on the situation, there may be alternatives:

  • Position changes

  • Movement

  • Monitoring a little longer

This question opens the door to those possibilities.

5. “Can you walk me through what this would look like step-by-step?”

Sometimes fear comes from the unknown.

Understanding:

What the process involves

What to expect

What decisions come next

…can make everything feel more manageable.

This Isn’t About Saying No—It’s About Understanding Your Yes

You don’t have to push back against everything.

You don’t have to “fight” your provider.

But you do deserve:

Clear explanations

Respect for your questions

A moment to process what’s happening

Because when you understand your options, your “yes” feels a lot more confident—and a lot less overwhelming.

How to Advocate for Yourself in the Moment

When things feel fast, keep it simple:

Ask one question at a time

Take a breath before responding

Look to your support person if you need help

You don’t have to have all the answers—you just need to stay involved in the conversation.

Real Talk From an L&D Nurse

I’ve seen moms feel calm, confident, and informed in these moments…

And I’ve seen moms feel rushed, confused, and unsure after the fact.

The difference usually isn’t the situation itself—it’s whether they felt included in the decision.

You deserve to feel informed.
You deserve to ask questions.
And you deserve to walk into birth feeling prepared—not pressured.
